Most 1.0 guides agree that the wand Battlemage (wand plus ward or shield) is the safest strong build. The wand got a free heavy attack and two new active skills in 1.0. For melee, the two-handed Barbarian gained the most, because heavy attacks now hit several enemies. Every save had its skill tree reset when 1.0 launched, so you can switch to any build below for free.
Before you spend points
- Points at cap: 212. That’s 98 from levels 2 to 50 (2 per level), 60 from Shroud Roots (1 each) and 54 from 18 Elixir Wells (3 each). These figures come from PinDrop’s reading of the 1.0 game files. Most players at level 50 won’t have all 212 until they’ve cleared every root and well.
- Node count is disputed: PinDrop counts 243 nodes, and EnshroudedBuilds.org says 231. Don’t plan around either total. Plan around the specific nodes you want.
- Respec cost: before 1.0, Keen charged 1 rune per spent point to reset. PinDrop notes that the 1.0 client shows a per-node cost at the Flame, but the amount isn’t in the files. Check it at your Flame before you plan a respec.
- Rank values below come from fan sites that read the 1.0 files. Keen’s changelog names the new skills but doesn’t give their numbers. Check each value against the tooltip in game.
1.0 balance changes that affect builds
These are confirmed in Keen’s 1.0 notes or hotfixes:
- Wands: heavy attack available from the start. New active skills Aerial Wand Attack and Wand Evasion Attack. Specials can no longer be interrupted.
- Melee: heavy attacks hit several close enemies. Two-handed axe range fixed. Blocking regenerates stamina.
- Daggers: skills moved from the Warrior area to the Assassin area. The Assassin, Frostbite Slasher and Blood Feather sets now upgrade melee crit chance instead of sneak attack damage.
- Adjusted nodes: Veteran, One-Handed Specialization, Inner Fires and Snap had their position, cost or effect changed. If an old guide routes through these, recheck it.
- Leech: percentage leech perks were nerfed for late game, and early leech now uses flat values. Builds that relied on percentage leech in 0.8 lose sustain.
- Shroud time: stacking time extensions was nerfed, and Hourglass Capsules became more common.
- Gems: Toxic Reaction buffed. Battle Mania and Obsession nerfed. Lesser Necromancy capped.
- Fire Wisp scroll (hotfix 1.0.0.1): now fixed at level 27, after it scaled out of control at endgame.
1. Wand Battlemage (best all-round, solo-friendly)
Sustained mid-range damage. You restore mana by parrying with a ward or shield, so you rarely run dry.
Skill order (EnshroudedBuilds.org, checked against 1.0.0.2):
- Levels 1-15: Mage Apprentice → Wand Specialization → Wand Mastery → Arcane Proliferation → Sting, then Intelligence and Constitution nodes
- Levels 16-35: Unity → Arcane Deflection → Life Burst → Chain Hit
- Levels 36-50: Wand Evasion Attack → Aerial Wand Attack → Blink (optional) → Blast and Cast (only if you carry a staff)
Why these nodes: Unity gives wand hits a 30% chance to restore 6% max mana. Arcane Deflection restores 30 mana per successful parry. Together they let the build keep firing nonstop. Arcane Proliferation gives a 30% chance of a double projectile (the extra one deals 50% less damage). Sting adds 20% to repeated wand damage.
Attributes: Intelligence first, then Constitution, with some Spirit. Gear: your highest-level wand and a ward or shield. Since 1.0, anvils in enemy camps repair both. Useful 1.0 spells: Entangle for packs, and a Shock or Fire Totem to drop while you kite.
Cinder’s Cradle caveat: one wiki lists the Ancient Constructs as lightning-resistant and weak to ice. If your wand is shock, keep an ice wand or ice spell for construct fights. See the Cinder’s Cradle guide.
2. Wand Archmage (pure caster, mid-game)
PinDrop’s buy order for a shock-wand caster, complete at level 34 using level-up points only:
Intelligence → Eternal Spark 3/3 → Unity 3/3 → Wand Specialization → Wand Mastery 3/3 → Mage Apprentice 3/3 → Arcane Proliferation → Aerial Wand Attack (level 13) → Sting → Wand Evasion Attack → Arsonist 1/3 → Wizard 3/3 → Mana Currents 1/3 → Blast and Cast → Thunder 3/3 → Chain Hit → Mass Destruction → Life Burst.
Why: Blast and Cast makes your next staff attack within 10 seconds of a wand crit deal +50% base damage. Wizard (+2% wand and staff crit per rank) feeds that. Thunder adds +10% shock damage per rank. Put attribute points into Intelligence, with Spirit second. PinDrop suggests the Alchemist Apprentice set early and the Tidecaller set from level 40.
This build has less defense than the Battlemage. It’s good for co-op, where someone else holds aggro.
3. Two-Handed Barbarian (best melee damage)
Skill order (EnshroudedBuilds.org):
- Levels 1-15: Barbarian’s Path → Strength nodes → Brute → Battle Heal
- Levels 16-35: Heavy Hitter → Two-Handed Specialization → Blood Rage → Endurance and Constitution nodes
- Levels 36-50: Merciless Attack → Barbarian (Flame node) → Relentless or Whirlwind Crescendo → Athlete (optional)
Key values (fan-sourced): Heavy Hitter +10% two-handed attack speed. Blood Rage +15% melee damage for 10 s after a kill. Brute up to +30% blunt damage. Merciless Attack +500% against overpowered (stunned) enemies.
Why it’s better in 1.0: heavy attacks now hit every enemy close together instead of only the first, and the two-handed axe’s second hit and whirlwind no longer miss. Brute’s blunt bonus also matters more in Cinder’s Cradle, where constructs are reportedly weak to blunt damage. A hammer is the natural choice there.
Attributes: Strength, Constitution, Endurance. Avoid Vigorous Deflection, because it needs a shield.
4. Ranger (bow with Eternal arrows)
Skill order (EnshroudedBuilds.org):
- Levels 1-15: Ranger → Marksman → Dexterity nodes → Bow Specialization
- Levels 16-35: Skill Shot → Sniper → Puncture → Blessed Arrows → Constitution and Endurance nodes
- Levels 36-50: Fatal Precision → Multi Shot → Barrage → Survival Instinct
New in 1.0: Puncture (ranged piercing damage. Its value is reported as +10% per rank in game but left as a placeholder in Keen’s post, so check it). Barrage (chance on bow hits to restore 1 durability). Survival Instinct (restores Shroud time on Shroud kills with a bow or dagger, reportedly +3 s per rank). Keen also added Eternal Ember and Eternal Voltaic arrows at several tiers, and Eternal arrows can now be upgraded. They cost mana per shot instead of ammo.
Note: Survival Instinct got more useful in 1.0, because Keen nerfed the other ways of stacking Shroud time.
5. Necromancer (summoner)
The newest archetype. 1.0 added Summon Hollow Skeleton, three summoned totems (Fire, Ice, Shock), and the skills Advanced Necromancy (more skeletons) and Totem Mastery (more totems). The core nodes listed by EnshroudedBuilds.org are Wizard, Mage Apprentice, Wand Mastery and Advanced Necromancy.
Limits to know (official): there is a cap on active summons, and casting past it replaces your oldest. Gem of Lesser Necromancy now has its own cap, and companions from Necromancy gems lose health outside combat. Keen also made skeleton attacks uninterruptible. Exact cap numbers aren’t published. This is strong for co-op crowd control, but you have fewer verified numbers to plan around than with the other builds.
Which one to pick
- Solo, any skill level: Battlemage.
- Co-op damage dealer: Barbarian or Archmage.
- Explorer in deep Shroud: Ranger, for Survival Instinct and long range.
- Hollow Halls with friends: Barbarian plus a Necromancer or Battlemage for crowd control.
Leveling routes are in how to level fast. For the full list of changes, see the 1.0 update summary.
